Após o álbum Painkiller (mais precisamente em 1992), Rob Halford deixa o Priest para montar o Fight, então o Priest encerrou suas atividades por quatro anos, até que em 1996 a banda anuncia o retorno com o vocalista Tim Ripper Owens substituindo Halford.

Com essa formação sai em 1997 o Jugulator, um álbum que mostra um novo Priest, que manteve seu flerte com o Thrash Metal presente na sonoridade do Painkiller e contou com um competente Ripper Owens mostrando ao que veio. Apesar de ter sido aclamado por vários críticos musicais e por uma linha dos fãs, a outra linha mais conservadora torceu o nariz para o lançamento.

Em 1998 é lançado o Metal Meltdown, mostrando a versatilidade de Tim Ripper Owens ao interpretar músicas originalmente cantadas pelo Metal God e algumas músicas do recente Jugulator. Em 2001 é lançado o polêmico Demolition, com uma recepção ainda pior dos fãs mais antigos, mas que agradou parte da crítica e do grande público, principalmente por mostrar uma sonoridade ainda mais 'moderna' do que o Priest vinha praticando.

Em 2003, após mais de dez anos, o Priest se reúne novamente com Rob Halford, dispensando assim Ripper Owens, que partiu para o Iced Earth. Novamente com o Metal God o Judas lança o aclamado Angel of Retribution em 2005 e se lança em uma extensa turnê que resultou em um DVD gravado no Japão.

Em 2008 o Priest lançou o álbum Nostradamus, um ousado projeto 'rock ópera' que mostrou toda a versatilidade dos músicos componentes da banda, com destaque para os vocais impecáveis de Rob Halford, que se mantém agraciando os fãs da banda com o mais puro vocal Heavy Metal!

O Judas Priest é um dos maiores expoentes da história do Heavy Metal. Sua trajetória começou em 1969, quando os amigos Al Atkins (vocal), KK Downing (guitarra), Ian Hill (baixo) e John Ellis (bateria), se valendo do clima mórbido da tediosa cidade industrial conservadora inglesa onde viviam e da influência que seus conterrâneos do Black Sabbath viriam a oferecer criaram uma banda que expressasse toda a energia que aquele hostil ambiente reprimia dos jovens.

Logo Al Atkins e John Ellis deram lugar ao lendário Rob Halford e John Hinch, respectivamente, oriundos da banda "Hiroshima". Posteriormente se juntou ao grupo o guitarrista Glenn Tipton, formando o famoso duo de guitarras que logo se tornou forte característica do grupo.

A sonoridade e o estilo propostos pela banda logo atraíram os grandes entusiastas do underground inglês daquela época, mas tanta novidade em uma banda só impedia que os rapazes atingissem o grande público (lê-se "mainstream") com facilidade. Após a gravação do debut "Rocka Rolla" (1974) o baterista John Hinch deixou o grupo para a entrada de Alan Moore. Com o novo baterista o "Priest" lançou o aclamado "Sad Wings Of Destiny" (1976), que lhes rendeu o primeiro contrato com uma gravadora de grande porte.

O álbum posterior, Sin After Sin (1977), veio confirmar a genialidade dos garotos ingleses que agora já contavam com um expressivo número de fãs, não só na Inglaterra como em todas as partes por onde tocavam. O Priest começava a alcançar sucesso internacional com o seu som e a influenciar outros grupos que naquela época começaram a moldar o que viria a ser conhecido como "The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal".

O auge de popularidade mundial da banda veio se confirmar no cultuado "British Steel" (1980), que contou com a substituição de Alan Moore por Dave Holland. Os posteriores Screaming For Vengeance (1982) e Defenders of the Faith (1984) só vieram enriquecer (brilhantemente, diga-se de passagem) a já genial discografia do Priest.

Nesta primeira parte da discografia do Priest abordaremos a primeira fase da banda com o vocalista Rob Halford (The Metal GOD!), que durou do Rocka Rolla até o extraordinário Painkiller, vindo posteriormente a ser substituído por Tom "Ripper" Owens. A fase de Ripper Owens e o retorno do grande "Metal God" aos vocais do Priest nós iremos postar posteriormente numa série de 3 posts que irão abranger a riquíssima discografia desta banda que é uma verdadeira "bíblia viva" do Heavy Metal.
